Size (vitola) and time available

A robusto is enjoyed in 30–45 minutes, a toro or a churchill takes an hour or more. Choose the size according to the time you want to give it — a cigar in a hurry is a cigar wasted.

Strength and coating

The wrapper gives much of the character. Connecticut is mild and creamy, ideal in the morning or for beginners; Habano and Maduro are more intense with notes of wood, coffee and cocoa. If you are just starting out, gradually increase the intensity.

Origin and freshness

Cuba, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and Honduras each have their own footprint. Regardless of origin, freshness matters: a properly stored cigar at 68–72% humidity burns evenly and retains its flavors.
