Orice umidor trebuie sa fie fabricat din lemn de cedru. Datorita proprietatilor de retinere a umiditatii pe care le are acest tip de lemn. Finisajele, insa, pot diferi. Se recomanda folosirea de accesorii pentru monitorizarea nivelului de umiditate din interior. Amplasamentul umidorului trebuie sa fie facut atent. A nu se pozitiona in lumina directa a soarelui sau langa surse de caldura.
